Ferrari 414 EV: not a weekend project

One challenge of doing neat automotive renders is getting the tail and head lights to look realistic. Exactly why I started this - it was supposed to be an experiment over the weekend but in the end took up most of my Christmas holidays. I went way past the lights and ended up substantially modifying the car body, getting the textures to work for the used-and-abused look that I wanted, spending an actual weekend in lookdev and lighting.

I ultimately decided that this will be my modelling showcase and I will pack this little scene with sci-fi gear, wires, electronics with lights and screens, etc. Ironically while I keep working on this, I keep improving my skills at work and this in turn changes the way I approach tasks. I was once warned of falling down this rabbit hole when working on personal projects. Best part - it’s all quads.

Though I consider the two renders above to be finished pieces (except for the windows), I decided to continue building on this concept of a slightly futuristic EV conversion of this Ferrari from the late 80s. I imagine that this is an overpowered courier vehicle, which needs to be serviced and charged only at a dedicated power station. It’s dirty and worn out because of intense service and little time between missions. I am also tired of car renders featuring Japanese license plates, so I used an actual license plate from the car we had in Toronto.

It is important for me to maintain a unity of style for all elements in this scene. So here is a future where form takes second place before function. So for inspiration I looked at industrial, military and medical equipment. The shape of each piece of is meant to imitate industrial design of the late 80s and mid 90s. Everything is built of plastic with rounded corners and large panel gaps.
